How to Survive the Holiday Season with the Chakras
Thankfully, we have the tools to be able to choose better for ourselves- one Chakra at a time. Using the masculine energies of the Root, Solar Plexus, and Throat Chakras, you can build a solid foundations and sense of who you are, and have the confidence to set boundaries, stay present, and enjoy your holidays, no anxiety necessary.
So, how do you do that? Below, we're sharing our top five tips for each Chakra, to help you navigate the holidays feeling grounded, confident, and calm! Let's dive in.
Root Chakra is your foundation, the place you come to when you need to feel safe, calm, and grounded. Having the stability of Root Chakra underneath you during holiday festivities gives you a firm foundation and starting point to help soothe anxiety. Anxiety is caused by a disconnection from your Root Chakra energy. To reconnect to that grounded place and ease your holiday anxieties, try these tips!
- Eat more protein! We all love a good holiday sweet, but there is something to be said for balancing that with protein. Protein helps to ground your energy and bring you back into your body, instantly staving off those anxious energies.
- Indulge, but keep it balanced... and in the morning. Speaking of holiday sweets, don't be afraid to enjoy your Christmas cookies or pumpkin pie, but remember that sweets bring your energy up towards your Crown. That's the opposite of what you want if you are trying to soothe anxious feelings. so enjoy your sweets, but balance them with protein, and enjoy them closer to the morning, so your energy has time to adjust throughout the day.
- Go outside! It can be difficult to find the motivation to journey outside and put our feet on the ground when it's covered in snow, but this nature energy is key to staying grounded during the holiday season. If you have to, take a hot pot of water and throw it on the ground so you can get your bare feet on the grass, and soak up all that beautiful Earth energy.
- Send Reiki to your feet! Reiki can be a powerful force in helping to calm anxiety and overwhelm, especially when you start with your feet. Send Reiki to your Root Chakra and the soles of your feet to help pull your energy back into your body.
- Give yourself a foot massage. This may sound odd, but hear me out. When you use physical touch, you bring your energy back down to your body. Massaging your feet activates your Root chakra energy and gives you a tactile reminder of where your body is in space, which will help soothe anxious thoughts and feelings.
Solar Plexus Chakra is the center of our identity, the place we go when we need to know who we are and where to put our motivations. Bringing the fire of Solar Plexus into the holidays will help you stay connected to yourself, without getting lost in a sea of other people's opinions and expectations.
- Know thyself. The most important aspect of Solar Plexus is knowing yourself. You can't speak up for what you want if you don't know what that is, and you can't show up authentically at a gathering if you don't know who you are. So now, before the holidays are in full swing, take a moment to get clear on what you want from this holiday season. How do you want to show up and act? What expectations do you have, for yourself and for the season, without worrying about the expectations of others? Get clear now, so that when the time comes you won't be struggling to find yourself.
- Lower your expectations. We all have this idea of the 'perfect' Christmas. You know, the one that looks like a Hallmark card. But we all get so wrapped up in trying to recreate that image of perfection that we don't realize it isn't what we actually want. So stop trying to find holiday perfection, and lower your standard a little. Watch a movie on the couch and eat popcorn instead of cooking a big Christmas breakfast. Just put up one string of lights, instead of decking out the entire house. Do what feels good, and what brings you joy, not what you 'should' be doing.
- Let yourself be enough. It's okay to not want what everyone else wants. It's okay to want a smaller Christmas, or a bigger gathering, or a different food, or to let go of a tradition that's just causing you stress. The holidays can be a time when we try to meet expectations that are based on a fantasy, not a reality. So let yourself be enough. Like what you like. Do what you want to do. See who you want to see. and let that be enough. Honor yourself and what you want- that's the Solar Plexus way.
- Wear what feels good. The holidays are filled with opportunities to put on your fanciest outfits and shiniest jewelry, but sometimes we put on the things that we think look good on the outside, rather than what makes us feel good on the inside. This holiday season, practice wearing the things that feel good to you. Your Solar Plexus will thank you!
- Spend time by the fire. The element of Solar Plexus is fire, and whether you have a giant fireplace or a tiny candle flame, exposing yourself to the light of a fire will help spark the fire within to burn a little brighter. Try to find some time each week to connect with the energy and element of fire, and feel your confidence and power soar.
Throat Chakra is where we express ourselves, the place we go to communicate our needs and to listen to the needs of others. This holiday season, practice opening your Throat Chakra and speaking up for what you need.
- Say no. You don't have to go to that party. You don't have to wear that dress. You don't have to cook, if you don't want to. Get comfortable saying no. As uncomfortable as it may be in the moment, it's worth it. honor and respect yourself enough to speak up for what you need, and practice saying no to what you don't.
- Hold the space. Just as you are experiencing anxiety and overwhelm, so if everyone else. If you want them to honor and respect you when you say no, you have to honor and respect them. Hold the space for others to share how they are feeling, and recognize that Throat Chakra is about both talking and listening. It goes both ways.
- Give yourself, and others, permission. When it comes to speaking up for ourselves, we are all waiting for someone else to give us permission. Permission to speak up, to like what we like, to want what we want. We all want someone else to tell us it's okay to be who we are. but you know who you are (hello Solar Plexus), so now it's time to share that and be vocal, knowing that when you speak up for yourself, you give others the permission to do the same.
- Sing! Singing along to your favorite Christmas carols is an excellent way to activate your Throat Chakra energy and get that communication and clarity flowing, so that when the time comes for you to speak up, you will be ready.
- Drink Water! Water is vital during the holidays, not just for your physical health, but to keep your energy flowing freely. When you swallow, you help to flush out any stagnant or stuck energy in your Throat Chakra. So make sure you drink up this holiday season!
